Two variable selection. methods were used to create species distribution models for 15 species. Experts identified more important climate variables than the statistical method. Despite differences in variables, models had high performance metrics and moderate overlap. Statistical variable selection is a useful first step in creating species distribution models. Expert input and using multiple models can improve map outputs for conservation planning.
