CK14+/p63+/vimentin+ tumor cells possess multipotency and give rise to tumor heterogeneity. Multipotent cancer cells can be cultured in media containing 4 small molecules. Tumor malignancy is acquired via myoepithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. These cells are likely to be the source of metaplastic carcinoma and tumor progression.
