Between 1853 and 1889, discussions of the Société médico-psychologique in Paris lead to the description of several mental illnesses, instead of Pinel's and Esquirol's unitary madness. They allow clinical approach of pathological entities called “psychosis” in french nosology dating from 1880: “folie circulaire”, dementia praecox (Morel) and especially chronic delusional disorder — dismembered after 1900. These debates oppose Salpêtriere medical school (Baillarger, J. Falret, Delasiauve, Charpentier, Seglas) to « spiritualist » philosophers (A. Garnier) and later to Sainte-Anne hospital admission school (Magnan, P. Garnier). They lead to an argued criticism of the contemporary psychiatric theories (mental faculties psychology, hereditary degeneracy) and to a classification methodology foreshadowing DSM-III and DSM-IV.
