Trypanosoma nabiasi was detected and isolated in culture from all the rabbit organs. Amastigotes were obtained in macrophages from infective cultured epimastigotes. Trypomastigotes appeared in blood of a rabbit inoculated with cultured epimastigotes. Using PCR ITS-1, four haplotypes within two lineages were identified. In phylogenetic trees, T. nabiasi is in the same clade as rodent trypanosomes.
