Extracellular polysaccharides can reduce salt rejection via BEOP mechanism. Biofilm stiffness strongly affects permeate flux recovery after cleaning. Biofilm stiffness and EPS viscoelastic properties corroborate with BEOP phenomenon. EPS affects mechanical biofilm properties and transport of ions in RO biofouling.
