Using spatial metrics and surveys for the assessment of trans-boundary deforestation in protected areas of the Maya Mountain Massif: Belize-Guatemala border
This multi-faceted approach provides relevant insights regarding deforestation. Patches witnessed compaction during low and elongation during high deforestation. The lack of coordination among managing organizations was seen as the major challenge. Fragmentation and deforestation are increasing in protected areas along the border. Bi-national research needs to be conducted to understand socioeconomic dimensions.
