Relation of mussel spatfall on natural and artificial substrates: Analysis of ecological implications ensuring long-term success and sustainability for mussel farming

文摘
Seed supply from natural beds is an ecosystem service that has a strong socio-economic impact in mussel farming. Recruitment in mussel beds appears to be affected by spatfall used for mussel farming, threatening mussel beds persistence. Oversupply of artificial substrates threaten mussel bed persistence, and therefore the sustainability of mussel farming. Replacement of spatfall with seeds produced in hatcheries, risks coming into socio-economic conflicts and ecosystem damage.
