CI users compared with NHL in a FST of 16 common sounds divided into 3 groups of vocal, musical and environmental sounds.
CI users follow similar categorization strategies to NHL and are able to discriminate the predefined groups of sounds.
Results for CI user were more variable and showed differences to NHL regarding the perception of individual sounds.
Acoustic analysis showed the importance of spectral (pitch salience) and temporal (mean autocorrelation peak) information.
