New stereology method to derive the 3D grain size distribution (GSDs) from sections. Tests show that the Saltykov and the new two-step method are applicable for mylonites. The Saltykov method is effective for measuring the volume of grain size fractions. The two-step method quantifies the shape of GSD using a single value. The method yields the first value describing the GSD shape in recrystallized quartz.
