Zn2 + and Ni2 + ions binding with Mb is exothermic whereas Mn2 + ion binding is an endothermic process. Insignificant exposure/burial of the hydrophobic groups occurs in Mb due to binding of Mn2 + and Zn2 + ions. The binding of Zn2 + and Mn2 + ions decreases the size of Mb whereas Ni2 + ion increases it. Zn2 + and Mn2 + ions provide conformational stability but Ni2 + ion provides conformational destability to Mb. M2 + ions do not interact with the heme moiety of Mb.
