Determination of NMR T2 cut-off for clay bound water in shales: A case study of Carynginia Formation, Perth Basin, Western Australia

Nuclear magnetic resonance T2 experiments were performed on saturated shale samples from the Carynginia formation. The effect of oven-drying shale samples was also investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance. A simple approach to determine a T2 cut-off for clay bound water is presented in this study. The average and median T2 cut-off was found to be 0.25 ms for the samples analyzed.
