Involvement of monoamines and proinflammatory cytokines in mediating the anti-stress effects of Panax quinquefolium

le='font-weight: bold'>Method: Plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-6, homovanillic acid (HVA), and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in 17 male schizophrenic patients and in the same numbers of age-matched healthy controls by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and high performance liquid chromatography. The patient's psychopathology was assessed by Scale for the Assessment of Positive and Negative Symptom (SAPS, SANS).

le='font-weight: bold'>Results: There were significant increases of IL-2 and HVA concentrations in schizophrenic patients. No significant differences of IL-1β, IL-6 and 5-HIAA concentrations were found. Significant correlation between IL-2 and SAPS score, IL-6 and SANS score, HVA and SAPS in schizophrenics were found.

le='font-weight: bold'>Conclusions: Interleukins appears to be associated with specific clinical feature in pathophysiology of schizophrenic disorder.
