An interface energy density-based theory considering the coherent interface effect in nanomaterials

A new continuum theory is proposed to study interface effect in nanocomposites. Parameters easy to determine are adopted to characterize interface properties. Interface elastic constants are no longer required. Size-dependent elasticity in nanoparticle reinforced composites is well predicted. The stiffening mechanism of nanoparticle reinforced composites is clarified.
