A wet-chemistry method comprised of sequential chelation, thickening, carbonization, dispersion, and calcination steps is demonstrated for the synthesis of multicomponent nanopowders. A state-of-the-art mixed ionic conductor BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.1Yb0.1O3?¦Ä (BCZYYb) is used as a case study and a powder particle size as small as 10 nm is successfully obtained using this approach. A synthesis mechanism is proposed which suggests that a mild butanol-solvent-mediated dispersion treatment prior to calcination can be used as a generic approach for the synthesis of multicomponent materials with extremely small nanoparticle size.
