Two rhodamine-derived chemosensors for cysteine optical sensing were reported.

Up-conversion nanocrystals were prepared and used as excitation host.

Efficient energy transfer between nanocrystals and chemosensors was confirmed.

A simple recognition mechanism with binding stoichiometry of 1:1 was observed.

Good selectivity and linear sensing behavior were obtained.
