Yb/Er: NaGdF4@NaYF4 core@shell nanoarchitectures were fabricated.

Increasing shell thickness greatly intensified green upconversion emissions.

Shell thickness had no obvious influence on fluorescence intensity ratio and sensitivity.

The adverse thermal effect was highly suppressed in the core@shell product.

These nanoparticles may be suitable for accurate temperature detecting in bio-field.
