“Narrative template” approach examines different tellings of a community narrative. Performative differences in tellings are related to power and identity. Underlying narrative template is a resource for shared sense-making. Different discourse activities used to realise template; narrative not a bounded genre. Empirical analysis of content vs. form rather than “one-off” narrative analysis.
