A PCCI engine with a pre-chamber is compared with two types of HCCI engines. The PCCI extends the operating range to leaner conditions and less air pre-heating. For the PCCI case, efficiency and NOx emission could be simultaneously improved. For the proposed PCCI strategy, both CO and HC emissions are drastically reduced. Insulating the pre-chamber remarkably improves engine efficiency.
