Prior to pregnancy, low fear and high confidence in knowledge are factors strongly associated with natural birth intentions. Addressing concerns about pain, safety and the perceived unpredictability of birth may strengthen natural birth intentions. High rates of intentions to use epidural analgesia may suggest low confidence in birthing naturally without epidural analgesia.
