Oil sand bitumen was upgraded by SC-CO2 extraction at 110 °C and 50–65 MPa. Oil extracted with addition of co-solvents was orange due to rejection of coke and asphaltene. Sulfur content reduced from 1.95% in crude bitumen to 0.6–1.1% in extracted oil samples. Refractive index analysis can be used to predict sulfur content.
