In 1900, mosquito-borne disease was not confined to the tropics. Preventing mosquito-borne disease transmission is a 20th century development. Vector control contributed to 1.5% of global population growth between 1900–2000. Suppression initiatives, prior to the use of DDT in the 1960s, affected aggregate health. Vector control contributed to 14% of African population growth.
