Nd3+ has been a paradigm ion for solid state lasers. It will very likely play an important role in Biomedicine too. Nanocrystals can be suitably doped with Nd3+ in order to get fluorescence nanoprobes for deep tissue fluorescence imaging. The spectroscopic properties of Nd3+ provide photothermal heating, nanothermometry and optical imaging.
