Neuromuscular diseases are a set of conditions. Their muscle weakness may cause alterations of the respiratory muscles. This may condition the presentation of recurrent respiratory diseases such as chronic respiratory insufficiency (daytime or nighttime), sleep disorders, pneumonias, and some alterations in the rib cage and for swallowing.
To describe the basic tests needed to make an adequate pulmonary evaluation in patients with neuromuscular disease.
A search of the literature was conducted, using the following data bases: Medline (Pubmed), Scielo, and scientific journals from different regions. The keywords used were: muscular dystrophy, respiratory physiotherapy, lung function tests, respiratory muscles and non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
Carrying out an adequate assessment of pulmonary function in patients with neuromuscular disease will help to appropriately diagnose respiratory complications, to initiate early pulmonary rehabilitation, and to improve the quality of life in patients with some type of muscular dystrophy.
