Pharmacological NOX4 inhibition is inefficient in later stages of neuropathic pain. Nox4 is upregulated early after peripheral nerve injury. NOX4 plays a role in the acute phase of neuropathic pain. NOX4-deficiency antagonizes early neuropathic pain states. NOX4-deficency is anti-inflammatory and locally reduces oxidative stress products.
