The yeast (S. cerevisiae) SL metabolic pathway is introduced and the levels and roles of dihydro and phyto forms are highlighted. Yeast SL nomenclature is clarified and compared to other standard nomenclatures. Levels of various SL species in the branches of the metabolic pathways are discussed. Distinct roles for hydroxylation, acyl chain length, and unsaturation are discussed based on the biophysical properties of the lipids.
