In this work, the authors present a method for the fabrication of a sensitive and relatively selective YSZ-based NO2 gas sensor utilising a CuO sensing electrode (SE). The SE was fabricated using heat-treated copper hydroxide, which was formed from the combination of an aqueous copper nitrate with a basic solution, via a highly controlled syringe-pump synthesis technique. After calcination, the resulting CuO was observed to be comprised of large adjoining micro-dimensional particles, with highly stepped edges. The developed sensor was sensitive to NO2, and relatively insensitive towards several common automotive exhaust components including CO, CH4, C3H6, C3H8, NO, H2, and NH3 at an operational temperature of 550 ¡ãC, under humid conditions.
