First study to examine the role of chronic immune activation on the risk of rejection in HIV+ kidney transplant recipients.

High levels of activation in HIV+ kidney allograft recipients did not decrease with transplant associated immunosuppression.

Paradoxically, those individuals with the highest levels of immune activation seemed to be less prone to rejection.

Pathological immune activation in HIV+ transplant candidates does not explain their increased susceptibility to rejection.
