Untagged retroviral Gag proteins were purified to near homogeneity. HIV-1 Gag proteins display reversible aggregation mediated by nucleic acids. The minimum length of nucleic acids required for this reaction is 12 nucleotides. The matrix domain facilitates but is not required for this reversible aggregation.
