To identify the relationship between school backpacks and back pain in children and adolescents.
A systematic review of observational epidemiological studies was conducted in MEDLINE, PEDro, Web of Science, LILACS and IME databases; specialized electronic journals and references of already identified relevant papers.
Through an electronic and manual search, 102 articles were identified, including 21 research papers that met the selection criteria.
The design of the backpack, the way it is carried and its weight were factors related to the use of school backpack and back pain. Most students carry weights that exceed recommended limits in their backpacks.
The studies are controversial regarding the relationship of the school backpack to back pain. It has been justified that the backpack weight should not exceed 10 % -15 % of body weight.
