Juvenile Symphodus ocellatus behavioural reactions were tested in a choice chamber. The time spent and the mean and variance of speed of the fish movements were examined. Bayesian methods were used to analyse the behavioural response. Behavioural responses cannot be interpreted using a single indicator of preference. Analyses of speed are an important complementary tool for studying fish behaviour.
