New formulation for the obstacle problem using an augmented Lagrangian formulation. The discrete system is not on the form of a variational inequality. No Lagrange multipliers are needed. The inf–sup condition is circumvented using a formulation reminiscent of the Galerkin least squares method. A priori and a posteriori error analysis.
