NIRS applied in COPD to assess the regional muscle heterogeneity of VO2, Q and their ratio. Heterogeneity for VO2 and Q progressively increased with exercise. However, VO2/Q heterogeneity remained unaffected with increased exercise. COPD tightly regulate regional muscle Q relative to VO2 during submaximal exercise. VO2/Q heterogeneity does not impact on muscle O2 availability at submaximal exercise.
