Plasmodium falciparum enolase (Pfeno) has a pentapeptide insert, EWGWS, not present in host enolases.

The EWGWS motif of Pfeno binds peptides containing the PWWP sequence.

Plasmodium ookinete enolase may bind PWWP domain in peritrophic matrix proteins facilitating it to traverse through mosquito midgut epithelium.
