U–Pb zircon analyses date the timing of sole metamorphism in the Semail ophiolite.

Metamorphism was diachronous at the two studied localities and spanned ≥1.3 Ma.

Early sole metamorphism was synchronous with formation of the ophiolite crust.

The data are consistent with ophiolite formation in a supra-subduction zone setting.

New models for the formation and evolution of the metamorphic sole are proposed.
