The Gideah South lithologies are a consequence of episodic vertical movements of the AML The ‘spotty’ gabbro is an equivalent to those ‘spotty’ gabbro described for IODP Site 1256 The varitextured gabbros were formed by crystallization of a melt containing ~ 0.4 to 0.8 wt.% H2O The presence of water is derived from subduction-zone-related fluids The felsic melts are related to both fractional crystallization and partial melting
