Analytical model for the design of in situ horizontal permeable reactive barriers (HPRBs) for the mitigation of chlorinated solvent vapors in the unsaturated zone
An analytical model for vapors transport and oxidation through HPRBs is proposed. HPRB thickness and lifetime to attenuate vapors at acceptable levels are estimated. Possible geotechnical issues related to HPRB depletion are addressed. HPRB design and performance for a real site contaminated by PCE and TCE is provided. Estimated HPRB capital costs are compared with traditional remediation approaches.
