Neotropical empirical evidence for plant food production origins is carefully considered. Paleoenvironmental and archaeological data are in accord with optimal foraging theory predictions. Some predictions from current concepts of cultural niche construction theory are rejected. Optimal foraging and niche construction theories are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
