Zirconia conformal monolayers are successfully grafted and sulfated on SBA-15. Acid and base groups are further incorporated to enhance the catalytic performance. Accessible Brønsted/Lewis acid and base sites work synergistically on involved conversions. High HMF yield is obtained using bulky biobased molecules. The stable network of developed catalyst results in its good recyclability.
