Novel transgenic mice were developed to investigate whether hematopoietic cells can become mature osteoblasts. Unique bone lining cells which are derived from hematopoietic cells but currently lack CD45 expression were identified. No hematopoietic derived cells were found to give rise to mature osteoblasts.
