The complex [Ni(LS2)] was obtained by the reaction of L(SH)2 (N,N′-bis(o-mercaptophenoxyacetyl)-1,10-diaza-4,7,13,16-tetraoxaoctadecan) with either Ni(acac)2 or Ni(OAc)2–4H2O in DMSO or DMF. As elucidated using single X-ray crystallography, the Ni(II) ion in the neutral complex is located in a distorted octahedral S2O4 coordination sphere that consists of two thiolate S atoms, two carboxamide O atoms and two ether O atoms which stem from the thiophenoxyacetyl sidechains in LS2. The complex can be oxidized in DMF solution at +0.27 V, +0.75 V, +1.26 V and reduced at −1.10 V (vs. SCE).
