Maternal childhood trauma, postpartum depression, and infant outcomes: Avoidant affective processing as a potential mechanism

Women were followed across pregnancy and postpartum. Maternal childhood trauma increased risk for postpartum depression (PPD). PPD negatively impacted infant bonding and physical growth. PPD mediated the link between maternal childhood trauma and child outcomes. Avoidance of distress cues may underlie risk for PPD in trauma-exposed mothers.
