文摘
The amplitudes of waves I, III and V of the brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) vary between normal subjects. There are factors that influence these variabilities, including age. These variabilities can be reduced using the ratio of amplitudes between V and I waves, which normal values are between 0.5 and 3.

Objective

To determine the amplitude ratio V/I of BAEPs in healthy children between 2–6 years old.

Methods

Cross-sectional study. A total of 102 normal developed preschool children were included. The stimulation parameters were: rarefaction, click, 80 dBnHL intensity, frequency 11.1 Hz, 2000 stimuli. The ratio V/I was calculated by dividing the maximal amplitude of wave V between the maximal amplitude of wave I.

Results

Sixty-eight percent were boys and 32% girls. We found amplitude ratios V/I 1.03 SD 0.52, a range 0.28–4. Eleven percent (n = 12) of the total sample were outside reference ranges.

Conclusions

the amplitude ratio V/I of the ABR is a useful tool reduce the inter-individual variability.

Significance

The values outside normal limits warrant a further investigation to identify peripheral or central auditory pathway pathology.
