We gave young women information on screening for a cancer or a non-cancer disease.

The information either did or did not include overdiagnosis and overtreatment.

We assessed how information affected screening intentions and psychosocial outcomes.

We found differential effects between the cancer and non-cancer conditions.

A ‘cancer effect’ may contribute to community eagerness for cancer screening.
