Temperature affects the interaction of a halochromic dye with salts in solution. This thermohalochromic behavior was studied for a family of nitroaryl phenolate dyes. Their thermohalochromism was investigated in various solutions of organic and inorganic cations. Plots of halochromic shifts vs. cation concentration yielded apparent dye-cation association constants (K). Variations of K in each solvent reflected the effect of temperature on the solvated dye-cation pair.
