Contemporary review on the pathogenesis of takotsubo syndrome: The heart shedding tears: Norepinephrine churn and foam at the cardiac sympathetic nerve terminals
Contemporary review on the pathogenesis of takotsubo syndrome (TS) is presented. Evidence supporting the involvement of sympathetic nervous system in the pathogenesis of TS is provided. Myocardial stunning in TS follows most probably the cardiac sympathetic nerve distribution. Evidence for the local cardiac sympathetic disruption and the consequences of norepinephrine spillover is presented. Research to confirm the relation of cardiac sympathetic nerves to the myocardial stunning regions in TS is warranted.
