PeakForce QNM-AFM was applied for the first time to study organic matter associated with oil sands fine solids. The patchy-distributed organic coating on clay particles was directly visualized. The surface coverage and average thickness of the organic coating on clay basal faces were quantitatively determined. The organic matter associated with the fine solids was found to be softer than asphaltene fraction of oil sands bitumen.
