Modelling tools were used to estimate the world peatland degradation and the resulting carbon dioxide emission. 25% of the actual peatlands are expected to degrade by 2050. This will be responsible for about 8% of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Conservation efforts can decrease peatland degradation are significant only in Europe.
