Heterologous expression of the human Phosphoenol Pyruvate Carboxykinase (hPEPCK-M) improves hydrogen and ethanol synthesis in the Escherichia coli dcuD mutant when grown in a glycerol-based medium
A metabolic engineering strategy is necessary to enhance the production of hydrogen and ethanol in E. coli through the redirection of C4 metabolites. The human PEPCK-M enzyme was selected for expression in E. coli according to kinetic parameters and type of regulation. The physiological expression of h-PEPCK-M in the dcuD E. coli mutant strain enhances hydrogen and ethanol production with respect to E. coli Pck under low pressure conditions.
