Concerns exist that the standard PLMS index does not reflect the truly periodic, but rather the number of all leg movements.
A recently introduced alternative PLMS index more closely reflects the ‘genuine’ periodic portion of leg movements.
We determined optimal thresholds to differentiate patients with RLS from controls concerning these indices.
Thresholds were 15/hour for the standard index, 13/hour for the alternative index, and 0.5 for the periodicity index.
The diagnostic accuracy of all indices for RLS was found to be high (83.2–85.5%).
