Potential CO2 emissions from defrosting permafrost soils of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau under different scenarios of climate change in 2050 and 2070

We estimate CO2 loss from defrosted permafrost soils on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. We compare four different scenarios of climate change in 2050 and 2070 each. Thawing-induced CO2 loss contributes about one third to total soil respiration. For a large data-scarce area, we provide maps of CO2 loss at a 1 × 1 km resolution. We approximate CO2 emissions as an important climate feedback from a key region.
